She has intervertebral disk disease and has had 2 episodes of disc herniation since Christmas. She is paralysed and I carry her in and out, upstairs downstairs etc... Tomorrow Arthur is on a emergency list for a kidney stone and I am still nursing his eye from the fifth operations in 2008. What to do with our Tasha, she is so attached to me and a very loving doggy

I have dachshunds and have one that was going down in April of last year. We have carried her in and out for potty breaks, kept her crated for crate rest and finally after all the medications the vet has given her and no improvement I went to a Chinese herbalist and my girl is improving. She can now walk without falling down and she can go potty without walking to do it. I have 12 dachshunds and a dorkie. I know what vets can charge so I have done most of my own work with the fur kids I do hope that your pup gets better.

Wow you really have a lot on your plate huh? Where do you live? Is there any way I can help you out?
I guess as to your impending decision, I guess ask yourself if Tasha is suffering and what her quality of live is. You will know what you need to do. An angel will whisper the right way into your ear.
I will say a prayer for your family tonight.

Sorry to hear of your troubles. I know what its like to care for a disabled pet...had 2 cats that couldn't walk and I looked after them for 4 years (looking back, I can't believe I did that) I hope your sweet pup improves soon.

Aw Laurence my heart breaks for you... I wish there was some way I could help... and I agree I think doxies are the most loving of all the dogs... I know my Cinda was and it broke my heart when we had to have her put down... she had a brain tumor... that was 30 years ago and I still cry when I think of her... I will pray for Tasha and you... also your hubby too... I've had kidnee stones too... not much fun... hope they take care of him soon...

She is such a beautiful baby. I pray for her well being and hope she improves. Do you have a crate you can put her in for a time while you are with Arthur? I have a dog too, so I know it is hard to know, what to do with them when you need to leave them for a time. I hope you can find something to help her with her back.

I had a dachshund for 15 years and she was my best friend. I lost her to heart disease, but, fortunately, she never had any back problems. They say not to let them jump up on furniture to prevent it but mine jumped up on the couch and the bed all the time. I guess she was just a strong little dog.
I feel for you and I wouldn't want to be in your shoes. It's a hard decision to make.

Thanks everyone for your kindness and advises. I know that we have a lot of animal lovers in the group, ideas and encouragment is always good to hear and appreciated. I do crate Tasha and the immediate is not a problem...How long can I do this is? I may try to see a acupunture veterinarian. My regular vet is not optimistic at all and I am questioning the quality of life for her and for us if her condition does not improve soon. Most of you probably remember that we adopted her from rescue California only 2 years ago after we lost Minnie to a brain tumor at age 5.

Laurence, my heart goes out to you. It is so hard to watch our fur babies suffer and not know what to do. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you. When our first Chow got to where she couldn't walk and would not eat that is when we knew her quality of life was not as it should be. As heartbreaking as it was to let her go we could not stand by and see her like that. She never was very friendly with the Vet until that last day, and when he came in to the room she actually stood up and wagged her tail for him. She never growled either. We all knew then that she knew he was there to make her pain go away. I still cry over her and our other 2 pets to this day. God Bless you, Sandy

My heart is aching for you Laurence. She's such a sweet baby. I hate to see her, or you and hubby, suffering so. Also, I had passed a small stone a few years back. Not any fun there. I will keep you all in my prayers. Be well.

Laurence, I really feel for you. A hubby that needs care at the same time as one of our little ones. Poor Arthur, emergency surgery...it must be a big one that he can't pass. One of the most painful situations. And about Tasha...it's hard to write through tears. You know how I get with animals. We try everything humanly possible to ease their pain, but when we don't succeed it tears us apart that we have to let them go

Please know my thoughts are with you and Arthur at this time...all sounds overwhelming. I do hope you can find a viable alternative for Tasha. It all sounds so hard, but I'm sure you'll find your way through all this.

How are you today? Remember in the midst of all the chaos to try and take care of YOU. Even if it's only time for a cup of coffee or a bubble bath. Be good to you. I will pray some more for you and your family. Love from your friend Grassy

I'm saying a prayer for you, Arthur and your baby, Tasha. It sounds like a hard time for you all. Like others have said, you'll have to think about her quality of life and whether you are able to keep caring for her, say a prayer, and then make a very hard decision. Hugs, Nancy

Laurence my heart goes out to you, truly it does. I pray for an improvement for the beautiful Tasha and strength for you as you nurse both her and Arthur. We had a retriever many years ago when I was in my teens and through a thoughtless cyclists she lost the use of her back legs, lost her bladder control, and partly lost her bowel control. We nursed her and carried her for 4 months and were beginning to think about having her PTS when someone suggested accupunture to us. We had nothing to lose and took Jenny along not expecting much. The results weren't a blinding flash of immediate success but slowly over 2 months she began to regain control.. would she have done anyway? The vet was unable to tell us. She remained wobbly on her back legs until she died of old age at the age of 15, but lived life to the full bless her. You have my warmest and heartfelt (((hugs))) xx
Mandy :)xx
