Next week Lamb says we're getting fiber optic for our TV and internet and we're saying goodbye to satellite for our TV and cable internet for our ISP. So what exactly is fiber optic? I know we are going from 3 megabit to 8 megabit service. What does that mean? I assume faster surfing? Can anyone put it in easy to understand Grassy language? Bottom line: will this significantly improve my internet experience?

Oooooooh thanks so much! They said it takes 4 - 6 hours to install. Did yours take that long? I wonder why? Are they going to need to run wires in our home since we don't have any fiber optic ones?

I wish I could explain this Grassy. I'll have to ask Walt and maybe I can understand what he says. That's a bit over my head at the moment.

Thanks Betsy. Yeah I don't get it either. As long as I can watch the American Idol Finals in peace . . . For a couple seasons, during the finals, it has rained so hard we've lost our satellite picture and I never got to see who won. Lamb says that will be a thing of the past with the fiber optic.

Boss Lady got fiber optics not too long ago. She can fill you in some more on this when she gets home from work.

I am close to clueless. They went through our town and buried the cables or wires for the fiber optics this summer, but it'll be a while yet before it's offered. They said with fiber optics there is no limit to how fast information can travel on them. Of course, other things still have limits...lol .....for now anyway. You know, like all computers aren't created equally.......and msn would probably still have white pages.....roflmbo

I've had fiber optics for a year now. To be absolutely perfectly honest with you....as far as surfing I never found it any different from DSL. But uploading and downloading images went zippity do dah. I've never had cable so I don't know. But the hospital where I work has cable and it is a lot faster than my fiber optics. But I don't think it's far to compare a system for a 900 bed hospital we my lowly abode
If your house had cable lines it will be easier for them, but it will still take them quite a few house to check and recheck. If it is Verizon, they actually have native English speaking people for tech support. You aren't transferred to a call station in India.
My combo is TV, internet and unlimited long distance phone. I don't have any extra $$ TV stations since we aren't TV nuts, and my monthly bill is $95 plus taxes and stuff comes to $116. Cheaper than what I was paying for before

Thanks yall! By having one provider for our TV and our internet, it will save us some $78. We will keep Vonage, our voice over IP phone. It's the only way I can call my Evil Twin and his wife when they are in Japan. I have no probbies with cable. It's just very expensive where I live (in the country) and if I can get fiber optics to be as fast as cable, I won't worry. I am a TV zombie and the TV package is better and less costly than the satellite deal, so I am delighted. Plus since the cable is underground there won't be much to interfere with the picture unless it's like moles or something. I remember back in the olden days when we were the first house to get ISDN and how fast we thought that was. Then it seemed so slow compared to DSL, and then snail slow compared to cable. And then when I got T1 at work, that made everything seem slow. I wonder if it would ever be feasible for subdivisions to go in together and share a T1 line? Thanks so much for all the help!

Oh, our carrier will be AT&T.
Verizon makes me so sad. I had them in GA for my cellular service. They are not in my area of Michigan yet, so I had to let them go when I moved here. I almost cried. I can't say enough good about Verizon's service. They had just about the nicest Customer Service.
One of the reasons I am not too sad about dumping my DISH is a certain DISH provider who shall remain nameless ha ha ha has offshored all its stuff so when I call for tech support, I get people in countries where they have never even seen a DISH receiver. And they are rude.
